On April 6th, Dr. Marguerite Hoey, spoke to students at the Union City High School during the Annual Career Fair. Dr. Hoey shared details about her career as a veterinarian at the Arlington Dog & Cat Hospital in Kearny, NJ. She also spoke to students about how she became interested in veterinary medicine. Throughout her presentation, Dr. Hoey also showed the students a slide show presentation along with simple tips on dental care, which students can practice at home with their own pets.
Brochures with information about career options were also distributed to students.
Showing students these practices and providing them with information a
bout the profession helps generate awareness, particularly in inner cities where information about careers in veterinary medicine can be very limited. The presentation also shed some light on animal related issues and the importance of taking pets to see a veterinarian.
Dr. Hoey’s visit is part NJVMA’s Diversity Initiative which aims to bring veterinarians to New Jersey school career fairs in the coming months. This new program will offer students the opportunity to learn more about careers in veterinary medicine and hopefully make that their career of choice.
Veterinary medicine is an extremely rewarding profession and getting more involved in career fairs at schools is a great way to get students excited early on.
Dr. Hoey’s visit is one of many more to come across the state. All stories will be featured on this blog, so be sure to stay tuned.
