Advocacy & Government Affairs

The NJVMA is committed to actively promoting the value of the veterinary profession to the public, association members, government entities and other stakeholders. We employee one of the top lobbyists in the state and meet with government officials to discuss issues that affect our members. Our staff and volunteers attend events across the state that provide opportunities to interact with legislators and promote the veterinary profession.

In New Jersey and across the nation, legislation that affects the practice of veterinary medicine and the health and well-being of animals is being introduced, often with little or no veterinarian input. Animal guardianship, breed-specific legislation, pain and suffering damages, animal cruelty, and non-veterinarians practicing veterinary medicine are important current topics.

In order to influence change in these and other areas, we ask you to be a part of the legislative process in New Jersey. As veterinarians, we are the experts on animal welfare, therefore, being aware of the issues and contacting our legislators when necessary is important.

Our goal is to have our state legislators reach out to you and other veterinarians in the state for guidance when animal related issues arise. To that end, the NJVMA would like to help establish working relationships between New Jersey veterinarians like you and state legislators in every district. We strongly encourage you to identify who the state legislators are in your work and home districts by visiting www.njleg.state.nj.us. Once they have been identified, please contact them and let them know that you can be a valuable resource when animal related issues arise.
