(September 22, 2025) The New Jersey Veterinary Medical Association (NJVMA) is proud to announce that Matthew Edson, DVM, MBA, CVPM, MRCVS—NJVMA president from 2019 to 2021 and founding dean of the Shreiber School of Veterinary Medicine at Rowan University—has been appointed by Governor Phil Murphy to the New Jersey State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners.

Dr. Edson is the founder and owner of Rancocas Veterinary Associates, a multi-doctor mixed animal practice in South Jersey. He served as NJVMA President during the tumultuous times of the COVID-19 pandemic, guiding the association through uncharted waters by ensuring veterinary personnel were deemed “essential personnel,” which allowed practices to stay open under safe conditions. He has also held leadership roles within the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and was appointed by Governor Murphy to the New Jersey One Health Task Force.

Throughout his career, Dr. Edson has been a strong advocate for advancing veterinary medicine, education, and public health, and his achievements have been widely recognized. He was named a Top Veterinarian by South Jersey Magazinein 2017, voted Best Veterinarian in Burlington County by Burlington County Times readers from 2018–2022, and has been featured on the NJBIZ Health Care Power 50 list from 2022 through 2025, recognizing the top influencers in health care across the state.

As founding dean of the Shreiber School of Veterinary Medicine—the first veterinary school in New Jersey—he welcomed the school’s inaugural class of 75 students this fall. His expertise in clinical practice, veterinary education, and public policy will bring valuable perspective to the Board.

The New Jersey State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners is responsible for licensing and regulating veterinarians in the state, ensuring the highest standards of veterinary practice and animal care.

“NJVMA is thrilled to see Dr. Edson appointed to this important position,” said Phillip E. Russo, CAE, NJVMA’s Executive Director. “As a Past President of NJVMA, a practice owner, and the founding dean of New Jersey’s first veterinary school, his leadership, expertise, and dedication will serve the people of New Jersey well.”

NJVMA congratulates Dr. Edson on this prestigious appointment and looks forward to his continued contributions to the veterinary profession and the greater medical community.
